Coffs Harbour/Sawtell Junior Camp March 2018

Coffs Harbour/Sawtell Golf Camp March 2018

On the weekend of the 17th & 18th March 2018 WGCNC hosted its first golf camp for the year for junior girls in the region to develop their game of golf.

We had seven girls attend the camp which included 2 beginners from Coffs Harbour & one from Wauchope.
Local golf professional Brendan Barnes (Sawtell) & Brandon Connor (Coffs Harbour) provided coaching on Saturday & Sunday.
Saturday’s morning session consisted of a welcome & introduction followed by stretching, warming up exercises and some skilled based games to relax everyone.
Brandon followed running a Short Game Session & Games based practice.
We involved a few of the Dad’s in this session to add a competitive edge to the games and this proved to be very popular.
After lunch Branden took our group onto the range to concentrate on Long Game – Set up, Aim & Routine. Each girl after fine tuning their routine was timed and viewed by Brendan.

To finish the day we moved to the putting area to play some skilled based games & provided individual tuition to each girl.

Our night activity was organised at Boambee Creek Reserve for a BBQ Dinner, swimming, kayaking and a game of footy & cricket on the sand.
This was enjoyed by the girls and their families who also joined in our activities.

Sunday morning we gathered at Sawtell Golf Club for breakfast prior to more coaching. We started on the range for short game practice, moving in from 100m at 10m intervals. This followed with some Bunker practice, a chipping game & one final a game of “Killer” on the putting green before lunch.
After lunch the girls headed out onto the course to practice under the guidance of Brendan who moved between the groups and assisted as required.
To finalise the weekend each participant was presented with a Certificate and gift for attending the camp.

Again the camp would not run successfully without the commitment of WGCNC, JNJG and coaches for which the girls and their parents are very grateful.
I would also like to thank Coffs Harbour & Sawtell Golf Club’s for their assistance in organising this camp.

A note of appreciation was posted on the WGCNC Website after the Camp by one of the girl’s parents:

“I would like to thank Catherine Robinson for the fantastic girl’s golf camp she coordinated last weekend at the Coffs Harbour and Sawtell golf clubs.
The weather was great and the Saturday night activity at the Boambee Creek Reserve was just fantastic.
Great coaching by Brendan Barnes and Brandon Connor was the highlight of the weekend and the games they put on to make the coaching more interesting for the girls was very well done and it included parents in those games.”

Preparation for our next camp at Port Macquarie on the 28 & 29 July 2018 is now under way.

2018 Ballina Junior Masters

2018 Ballina Junior Masters

A record field of nearly 100 junior golfers travelled to the Northern Rivers last weekend to compete in the 2018 Ballina Junior Masters.

After three years of building the event up, the Ballina Golf Club once again hosted the tournament with the biggest number of players in the tournament’s short four year history.

In the Girls Division, Queenslander Keely Purdey claimed her first Major Title keeping up the Queensland Girls perfect record in the event, but was pushed all the way by 13 Year Old Charlotte Perkins (Cronulla). The impressive pair pulled away from the rest of the field, with Perkins even managing to draw level with only four holes to play. After a difficult period mid-round, Purdey showed class and steadied when she needed to, making a par on the tough 15th hole before two long shots and a two-putt birdie on the 16th hole sealed the title.
The other stand-out in the Girls was Ella Scaysbrook (Port Macquarie), who defied her 15 Handicap to record rounds of 84-80 and finish at 10 Under Par in the Nett Division, as well as 4th place overall in just her 3rd JNJG Junior Masters Event.
Six girls from our area participated in this event out of a field of 18 girls which was fantastic.
