Junior Camp at Sawtell
On the weekend of the 26th & 27th November 2016 WGCNC hosted its third golf camp for junior girls in the region to develop their game of golf.
Eleven girls attended the Sawtell camp. It was great to see two girls travel from the Hunter region and one girl from the Northern Rivers to participate.
Local golf professional Daniel Ryan assisted Brendan Barnes (Sawtell) with coaching on the Saturday.
The morning session consisted of an introduction from the girls, the girls then split into two groups. Both groups concentrated on their short game, practicing skills and learning chipping techniques. Just before lunch the two groups joined together for some putting tuition and practice. Daniel introduced a new game (Killer) which proved very popular amongst the girls.
After lunch the girls headed out onto the course to play 9 holes. Brendan & Daniel moved between the groups and assisted the girls in course management, etiquette and scoring in preparation for the tournament the next day. As they groups finished the girls headed back to the putting area to play the Killer putting game against some of the parents. This became quite competitive!
Our night activity was organised at The Big Banana Laser Tag Centre. This was fantastic and all the girls appeared to really enjoy the evening and interacted well together.
Sunday morning we again gathered at Sawtell Golf Club for breakfast prior to participating in their tournament.
We had six girls play in the 18 hole competition and five girls in the 9 hole competition. This was the first tournament I have attended where the number of girls participating outnumbered the boys playing. Whilst the overall numbers were disappointing for the club, it was felt that it was a start as they had not hosted a junior tournament for over 5 years. Everyone enjoyed the tournament with plenty of support & prizes for all participants.
Again the camp would not run successfully without the commitment of WGCNC, JNJG and coaches for which the girls and their parents are very grateful.
I would also like to thank Sawtell Golf Club for their assistance in organising this camp.
